Dear Friends,
Two weeks ago, on Erev Pesach, just a few hours before the Seder meal, a fire broke out outside the building of Chelev Ha'aretz and its offices caught on fire. Police blame an improperly extinguished "chametz fire" in the area as the cause. As you can see from the attached photos, the petting zoo, synagogue, kitchen, upper building and many storage spaces were destroyed. Even the rooms that were not burned, are now covered in ashes.
In addition to the damage in the physical structure of the building, countless supplies and critical equipment were lost. This included computers, screens, stereo systems, water coolers, musical instruments, furniture and kitchen equipment – much of it donated. The insurance is covering only a fraction of the actual replacement costs.
Some of the worst damage was to supplies for the summer camp. Chelev Ha'aretz's Summer program serves the poor and disadvantaged children of this neighborhood. Rav Yair is now faced with the overwhelming task of re-building the facilities and replacing the lost equipment, so that these children will not have to spend the long summer months on the street.
Once again – you can help. All donations are tax deductible and any amount will help. Shekel checks should be made out to "Chelev Ha'aretz" and mailed to "Chelev Ha'aretz, Rehov Gideon 7, P.O.B. 8285, Jerusalem. Dollar donations can be sent to PEF directly, or you can write a check to PEF, with a tag on the bottom that it goes to "Chelev Ha'aretz" summer camp and mail it to the Gideon address.
Rav Yair is also looking for the following items. If you have something at home in good condition that you would like to donate:
1 – children's bicycles
2 – sporting equipments (soccer balls, basket balls)
3 – camping equipment (tents, sleeping bags, rubber rafts)
4 – outdoor play equipment (swing set, slides, foam mats)
5 – computer equipment (screens, computers, keyboards)
6 – toys and art supplies
7 – musical instruments (keyboard, guitars, drum sets)
8 – children's furniture – tables and chairs
9 – kitchen equipment
For more information or details call 02-673-7345 or (Rav Yair) 052-267-3152.
May we always be in a position to help others.
