בס"דשלום קהילה יקרה,
כולי געגוע לימים שהתראינו פנים אל פנים, בבית הכנסת וסתם ברחוב.
עכשיו שאנו סופרים את הימים ומתקרבים אל חג שבועות, אני מוצאת את עצמי חושבת אודות מעגל השנה. כמה שונה השנה הזאת מכל השנים!
מי בראש השנה היה חושב שנעבור את כל מה שעברנו עד כה? ברמה האישית, הארצית והבין לאומית, הכל השתנה מהמוכר והצפוי, ומזכיר לנו לא לקחת שום דבר כמובן מאליו! היו גם אירועים מבורכים כמובן – לידות, חתונות, גשמים ובניה, אך קללת הקורונה – מחלה, אובדן, בידוד וקריסת מערכות כ"כ נרחבת, עדיין קשים לעיכול והבנה.
כמה אנחנו זקוקים ל "תיקון" שבועות!
מי עדיין זוכר שבשמחת תורה, נוסד מעמד של כלת התורה של הקהילה? להפתעתי ולשמחתי, כיבדתם אותי במעמד המרגש הזה. הרגשתי אז ועוד היום שקטונתי מכזה מעמד, בייחוד בין כל הנשים הראויות לתואר שחברות אצלנו בקהילה. תחושתי היא שבאותם הימים לא הספקתי להודות לכם כראוי.
היום, זכיתי לתזכורת מדהימה לאותם רגעים של התרגשות שהיו לי בשמחת תורה.
בבוקר, בשיעור ב"זום", בסלון ביתי, סיימתי את לימוד החומש עם הרבנית שני תרגין במת"ן בקבוצת נשים, הכוללת גם כמה חברות בקהילה. המסע מספר בראשית עד ספר דברים ערך 12 שנה! עם המילים "חזק, חזק, ונתחזק״ נזכרתי בפעם האחרונה שסיימנו את קריאת ספר דברים (ע"י ציפי בן מלך) בבית המדרש של הקהילה. היום וגם אז, לא ציפיתי להתרגש כל כך, אך מצאתי את עצמי נרגשת עד מאוד.
למי שלא זכה להשתתף באירוע של שמחת תורה – הרשו לי לצייר לכם תמונה. היינו קבוצה של נשים וילדים, חברות הקהילה ואורחות, צפופות בבית המדרש, מקשיבות רוב קשב לקריאת התורה מפי נשים, עם גבאיות, ושקט מופתי סביב. כמה גברים "התגנבו" פנימה בכדי לתמוך בנו וביניהם זכיתי לנוכחותם של סטיב בעלי ויונה אבי, שייבדל לחיים ארוכים. מצאתי את עצמי רועדת כשקראו בשמי כ"כלת התורה", וגם כשהרימו את הטלית מעל ראשינו ומעל התורה. בשתי ידי אחזו שניים מנכדי, ובסמוך עמדו אמותיהם – שתי בנותיי, ולצדן כמה מחברותי הטובות, מקיפים אותי כולם באהבה.
הפסוקים האחרונים של ספר דברים עצמם מלאים רגש. משה רבינו, הנביא שדיבר עם הקב"ה פנים אל פנים, מסתכל מעבר הירדן לארץ ישראל, שהוא בעצמו לא יזכה להכיר. הוא מברך את העם בדומה לברכת יעקב את בניו, אבל לא באותו הסדר. כפי שלמדתי מהרבנית שני, הסדר של הברכות בדברים מבוסס על הסדר בו יכנסו לארץ. משה מסתכל על הארץ, רואה הרים ובקעות, ערים ושדות, ומברך את השבטים לפי נחלה. שבט לוי שלא יזכה לנחלת אדמה, מקבל את ברכתו בין יהודה ובנימין, כי נחלתו תהיה בעבודת ה' במקדש בירושלים.
פרק ל"ג מסתיים:
"וַיִּשְׁכֹּן יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּטַח בָּדָד עֵין יַעֲקֹב, אֶל-אֶרֶץ דָּגָן וְתִירוֹשׁ; אַף-שָׁמָיו, יַעַרְפוּ טָל. אַשְׁרֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִי כָמוֹךָ, עַם נוֹשַׁע בַּה', מָגֵן עֶזְרֶךָ, וַאֲשֶׁר-חֶרֶב גַּאֲוָתֶךָ; וְיִכָּחֲשׁוּ אֹיְבֶיךָ לָךְ, וְאַתָּה עַל-בָּמוֹתֵימוֹ תִדְרֹךְ."
ואז משה עולה להר, ומת שם. הקב"ה עצמו קובר אותו, ומקום קבורתו לא נודע לנו.
יש האומרים שמשה כתב את הפסוקים האחרונים על מותו בעצמו בדמע. קחו דקה לחשוב על זה…
אחרי 120 שנה, חיים של עשייה וקשר ישיר עם אלוקים, משה נפרד מהעם, ובוכה.
על מה הבכי? לא יודעים בדיוק אך משערים שחלק גדול הוא על פספוס ההזדמנות להגיע לארץ.
להבדיל, אני בע"ה בחצי הדרך (בגיל 60), מתרגשת מהזכות אשר נפלה בחלקי, לחיות בארץ ישראל, בירושלים, בשכונת בקעה (שווה "גן עדן" בגמטריה) ובקהילה שלנו! זוהי קהילה שלומדת יחד, שומרת מצוות ומסורת, אך גם מתחדשת ומתאימה את עצמה אל מול מציאות חדשה. זוהי קהילה שתומכת גם בחבריה ובכלל בעם ישראל בגמילות חסדים וצדקה. זוהי קהילה שאוהבת את הארץ ומטיילת בה יחד. זוהי קהילה שקיבלה את הוריי כחברים ואף הזמינה אותם ליטול חלק פעיל בקהילה כניצולים שסיפרו את סיפוריהם ביום השואה. זוהי הקהילה שבה שלושת נכדינו (בע"ה) נכנסו לבריתו של אברהם אבינו. זוהי הקהילה בה אנחנו משתתפים בשמחות וצרות עם חברינו.
ולקהילה הזו, שזיכתה אותי להיקרא "כלת תורה", אני מודה מעומק ליבי.
"וַיִּשְׁכֹּן יִשְׂרָאֵל בֶּטַח בָּדָד / אַשְׁרֶיךָ יִשְׂרָאֵל מִי כָמוֹךָ, עַם נוֹשַׁע בַּה' "
בקריאת מילים אלו לפני חג מתן התורה הזה, אני מאחלת לכולנו שנזכה לחגוג את הברכה הטמונה בקבלת התורה, ושלא ניקח שום דבר כמובן מאליו! יתרה מכך, אני מאחלת לנו שבקרוב נחזור לבית הכנסת המיוחד שלנו עם רצון טוב ועין טובה, כוחות מחודשים והמון בריאות!
חזק, חזק, ונתחזק! חג שמח ושבת שלום!

Dear Friends,
I am sincerely missing the days when we could meet face-to-face in shul, or just casually in the neighborhood!
Counting the days to Shavuot, I have been thinking about the holiday cycle of this year. How different this year has been from all other years!
Who, on this past Rosh Hashanah, might have imagined a year such as this? From personal, national and international perspectives, everything familiar or expected has changed so drastic ally, reminding us constantly not to take anything for granted! There were blessings of course – weddings, births, great rainfall, and growth– but the curse of Corona – disease, loss, isolation and such widespread breakdown of the public sphere – these are still too hard to comprehend! We certainly are ready for a remedy (AKA "Tikun") this Shavuot!
Might anyone else recall that on Simchat Torah, our congregation initiated a new honor – Kallat Torah? To my great surprise, this unique honor was bestowed upon me. Still now, I am humbled by this, especially given the many deserving women within our kehila. I realize regretfully, that at the time, I didn't fully express my appreciation.
I received a wonderful reminder of the emotion I experienced on Simchat Torah earlier today. In a "zoom" class, alone in my living room, I took part in a "Siyum" of the Chumash, at Matan, with Rabbanit Shani Taragin and a varied group of women, some of whom are also members of our kehila. Our journey from Bereishit through Devarim took 12 years!
As we pronounced the words "Hazak, Hazak, v'Nithazek", I was reminded of the previous time we completed Sefer Devarim, (read by Tzippi BenMelech) in the Beit Midrash of our synagogue. As then, I didn't expect to be moved so emotionally, but indeed, I was!
For those who weren't present at the Women's Reading on Simchat Torah, please allow me to describe it from my perspective. A group of women and children, members of the kehila and guests, crowded into the Beit Midrash, to hear the Torah being read by women, with female 'Gabbayot' keeping order, in a quiet, awesome atmosphere! A few men "snuck" in to share the nachat with us, and among them were Steve and my father. I trembled when my name was called for the aliyah of Kallat Torah, and again when a tallit was raised over our heads looking over the Torah scroll. In each hand, I held the hand of a grandchild, while nearby, their mothers – my daughters – and several good friends surrounded me with love.
The last verses of Sefer Devarim are emotional in their own right. Moshe Rabbeinu, the prophet who spoke face to face with G-d, is looking over at the land of Israel, which he himself will not actually reach. He blesses the nation, as Yakov had blessed his sons, the forebears of the tribes, but in a different order. As I learned from Rabbanit Shani, the order of the blessings given by Moshe is based on the order in which the tribes will enter and establish their Nachalot. Moshe looks over at the land, sees the mountains and valleys, the cities and fields, and blesses the tribes according to their destination. The Levites, who will not settle a particular land, receive their blessing between Yehuda and Binyamin, because the essence of the Levites' role will be in Jerusalem, in the Mikdash.
Chapter 33 ends:
"And Israel dwells in safety, the fountain of Jacob alone, in a land of grain and wine; yea, his heavens drop down dew. Happy are you, O Israel; who is like you? A people saved by the LORD, the shield of your help, and He is the sword of your Excellency! And your enemies shall dwindle away before you; and you shall tread upon their high places."
In Chapter 34, Moshe ascends the mountain where he will die. G-d Himself will bury Moshe, and the exact place of burial is still unknown to us all.
It is said that Moshe wrote the last 8-12 verses, describing his own death and its aftermath, with his own tears. Take a moment to think about that image…
At age 120, after years of service and devotion and direct connection to G-d, Moshe says farewell to the Israelites, and cries.
Over what was he crying? We don't know for sure, but many surmise that he felt tremendous regret for actions which kept him from reaching the Land of Israel.
In stark contrast, I at age 60, halfway through life (G-d willing), feel so blessed to live in Israel, in Jerusalem, in Baka (equivalent to "Gan Eden" in Gematriya), and in our community. This is a congregation which learns together, and strictly observes commandments and traditions, but also knows how to innovate and adapt to modern times. This is a community which supports its members and society in general with acts of Chesed and generous charity. This is a community which loves the land of Israel, and travels throughout its various regions, together. This is a congregation which welcomed my parents as honorary members, and invited them to share their personal stories of survival on Yom HaShoah. This is the congregation in which our 3 grandsons (so far, bli ayin hara!) had their Brit Milah. This is the community with which we share happy times and sad.
And this is the congregation which greatly honored me with the title "Kallat Torah". For all of this, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
"And Israel dwells in safety, alone / Happy are you, O Israel, who is like you? A people saved by the LORD.
Reading these words again before this Shavuot, I pray: May we celebrate the blessing which is inherent in accepting the Torah, and not take anything for granted! May we soon return to our beautiful synagogue, with good will, a positive outlook, renewed energies and much good health!
Hazak, Hazak v'Nithazek! Hag Sameach and Shabbat Shalom!
