יעל היתה שכנה שלנו, חברה שלנו, חברותא שלנו ומורה שלנו. לאלו מאיתנו שלמדו איתה בכל יום ראשון בערב בבית הכנסת עמק רפאים, השיעור שלה היה מפגש ולימוד לו חיכינו כל השבוע.
כולנו ידענו והערכנו שלקחה את הלימוד ברצינות רבה, והשקעתה היתה ברורה לכולן. כל שאלה שנשאלה זכתה לתשובה. לא התיימרה לדעת את כל התשובות והערכנו אותה רבות על כך, אבל תמיד ידענו שתחזור עם תשובה בשבוע לאחר מכן. יעל לא התייחסה בזלזול לאף הערה או שאלה. כל שאלה היתה מבחינתה לגיטימית למסע הפנימי של כל אחת ואחת. כל שאלה זכתה לתשובה מכובדת עם הרבה חן אישי.
כל התכונות הנעלות האלו באו לידי ביטוי בהספדים של מוקירי זכרה: רצונה להקשיב, התשוקה שלה להסביר ולהעמיק, וכמובן החן שלה. התגלה לנו דרך ההספדים שיעל חיכתה לשיעורים השבועיים בציפיה ובלהיטות לא פחות מאיתנו. אנחנו מקוות שהלימוד הביא לה לנחת רוח, כפי שהיתה ראויה לה.
אחדים מהקהילה אף הצטרפו אליה בשיעור בנושא התפילה, שהחלה להעביר לפני מחלתה. גם פה הלימוד היה משמעותי מאוד עבורה וקיוותה להמשיך אותו כשתבריא.
הנשים שלמדו אצל יעל לעולם לא למדו גמרא. כשזכו להגיע לסיום מסכת מגילה, אמרה להן יעל, ״אני גאה בכן.״
עוד ספור ראוי לשימת לב: ערב אחד ביקשה יעל מאישה האהוב, אחד הגבאים מאז שעלה ארצה בתשס"ב, לפתוח את בית הכנסת, להוציא ספר תורה מארון הקודש, ולשים אותו על שולחן הבימה. אחת אחת קראה לנשים לעלות לבימה כדי להראות להן את המילים הכתובות בתורה. היתה פרשת שירת הים. זלגו דמעות של אושר, כי אף פעם לא ראו הנשים ספר תורה מקרוב. יעל רצתה ללמד אותן שהתורה שייכת להן לא פחות מגברים, גם ניו-יורק. וגם בירושלים.

Yael was our neighbor, our friend, our chevruta, and our teacher. For us, the group that studied with her every Sunday evening at the Yael Street shul, her Gemara shiur was one of the highlights of our week.
We all knew and appreciated that she took the teaching very seriously, and the effort that she made to come prepared was obvious to all. Every question that was asked always received an answer. If Yael did not know the answer, she never pretended otherwise, but we knew that she would come back with the answer the next week! No question or remark was ever treated as trivial; it was given an honorable response, with a great deal of personal חן.
All these qualities were mentioned in every hesped given at her levaya: her willingness to listen, her drive to explain, and of course, her "chen". What we did learn, that was very meaningful to us, was that the shiur was as important to Yael as it was to each and every participant! We are thoroughly grateful that we were able to give her some nachat ruach, which she so richly deserved.
Yael also began teaching another class at the shul for men and women on tefilla, wanting them to understand the meaning of the prayers. She took this study seriously, too, and was hoping to return to it after her illness.
The women who attended Yael's shiur had never learned gemara. They ultimately succeeded in celebrating a siyum of Masekhet Megila, at which time Yael said to them (as reported by her oldest daughter, Talya, who was present) "I am proud of you."
Another noteworthy episode: one evening Yael asked her beloved husband, one of the gabbaim since making aliyah in 2002, to open the shul, take out a sefer Torah from the aron kodesh, and place it on the bima. She then called each one of her students up to the bima, and showed her the words written in the Torah. It was the parasha of Shirat HaYam. The tears of joy flowed freely, as these women had never seen the inside of a sefer Torah. What Yael wished to teach them was that the Torah was as much theirs as it was for the men. This lesson was clearly in keeping with her teaching of the Talmud to women, both in New York and in Jerusalem.
